My Mom Always Voted

CK and Char at the polls in Springfield Township, Montgomery County, 2017.

If my 90-year-old mother could get herself to the polls, for both the primary and general elections, so can you.

This is what they call an “off-year” election. Turnout is typically 20%, says President and CEO of Pennsylvanians For Modern Courts Debbie Gross. That’s abysmal. Why turnout is so low is another discussion; not the subject of this episode of CK Unmuted with Debbie Gross. On this episode, we talk about the judicial races happening across the Keystone State.

If you’re not disturbed by recent ethics violations among members of the U.S. Supreme Court and other justices around the country, you’ve been asleep - comatose - at the wheel. WAKE UP! (If you were in the room with me right now and admitted to being unaware of this, I’d give you a good thwack with a sock upside the head. This is serious.) Our judges, at all levels, need scrutiny.

Following are the websites I recommend you visit to learn about the the PA judicial candidates competing in the primary on Tuesday, May 16th:

  1. Spotlight PA - spotlightpa.org

  2. Pennsylvanians For Modern Courts - pmconline.org

  3. Pennsylvania Bar Association - pabar.org

I also really love tuning in to “Meet the Candidates” events. It’s sort of a speed-dating, whirlwind tour of the candidates, but it gives you a quick, personal glimpse of the people vying for your vote. Here are a few upcoming, and recently-recorded forums:

  1. Appellate Courts Candidates’ Forum - Tuesday, May 9th, 6 - 7:30 pm. Recommended for getting an idea of PA Supreme Court candidates and other appellate court candidates.

  2. 2023 Montco Democratic County Commissioner Forum - Aired April 26th, but good to watch if you live in Montgomery County, like I do. Five Democrats and three Republicans are competing for spots on the 3-member Board.

If I can claim an iota of credit for getting you to study the candidates and vote on May 16th and November 7th, I’m ecstatic. Listen to Debbie’s interview below for more inspiration. Thank you, Debbie Gross, of Pennsylvanians For Modern Courts, for all the amazing work you and your team do to strengthen and preserve our remarkable system of government.
